What is Fine Arts Week?
York High School’s Fine Arts Week is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to hear student, collegiate, and professional groups from the Chicagoland area. The mission of Fine Arts Week is to expose students to the many different forms of artistic expression. The week includes a student Talent Show, performances by nearby colleges (Elmhurst College, COD), and performances from several of the student performing arts groups (Jazz Band, Speech Team, Sketch Comedy, Amateur Musicians, Group Interpretation, A Capella, York Dance Company). The events of the week are largely planned, organized, and directed by the students. Fine Arts Week allows students the chance to gain real-life experience with skills related to careers in the arts.
Why does it matter?
Fine Arts Week gives students a chance to express their artistic talents in ways that are not offered in a classroom. I love seeing students demonstrate a different side of themselves that I never knew existed.
Everyone at this school is exposed to the fine arts in some way, but I feel that not all truly recognize and appreciate it as much as they should. Having Fine Arts Week is so important to everyone because it gives them a chance to have beauty, life, and legacy right in front of them. We celebrate the fine arts because we are all members of the human race. We are all people that deserve to engage in its beauty.

York’s Fine Arts program allows students and faculty to express their artistic abilities to the community, whilst giving peers the opportunity to learn from skillful artists.
York’s Fine Arts program, in my opinion, gives students a break from conventional Fine Arts courses and allows them to watch, learn, and enjoy from other artists.
Fine Arts Week showcases the artistic talents of many individuals, and helps to bring people together through a mutual love of art. Whether it’s discussing a favorite moment from the talent show, or being inspired by a classmate to try something new, I’ve noticed that Fine Arts Week seems to invoke a kind of increased awareness of others in the student body. You’d be hard pressed to find another York community event that connects with almost every single student at York the way that Fine Arts Week does.
Fine Arts Week is a rare time in high school when students are able to purely enjoy the talents of their peers, support them, and see the kid, who normally sits quietly in the back, rock-out on stage. Expression is what makes us unique and FAW gives every student an opportunity to express themselves. FAW also serves the purpose of helping students realize that geometry and chemistry are not the most important things to life, but rather that music and art are what make us human.
